[origin: DE19511864C1] The engine has a crankcase with side wall sections (12,13) which extend beyond its end wall (9). These form a box (14), which has a gap (15) nearest the cylinder head, and another gap (17) nearest the sump. The gap nearest the cylinder head is bounded by a web (16) which links the upper ends (12',13') of the side wall extensions. Both the upper ends and the web are flush with a flange surface (5) on the crankcase to which the cylinder head can be fastened. The lower ends of the side wall extensions may also be linked by a web (18) and this may be flush with the connecting surface for the sump.

Eine Brennkraftmaschine umfaßt unter anderem einen Zylinderkopf, ein Kurbelgehäuse, eine Ölwanne und einen Ketten- oder Riementrieb für den Antrieb der Nockenwelle. Dieser Ketten- oder Riementrieb ist an einer quer zu Seitenwänden verlaufenden Stirnfläche des Kurbelgehäuses angeordnet. Zur Reduzierung der Bauteile und für eine bessere Abdichtung weist das Kurbelgehäuse an der Stirnseite Seitenwandabschnitte auf, die als Verlängerung der Seitenwände über die Stirnseite hervorstehen. Diese Seitenwandabschnitte bilden einen mindestens teilweise einstückig mit dem Kurbelgehäuse ausgeführten Steuerkasten, in dem der Ketten- oder Riementrieb angeordnet wird. <IMAGE>
