[origin: WO9518277A1] The hollow, substantially transparent load-bearing structure, with high mechanical impact and shear strength, to be used as an embedded or supported post or beam, is essentially made of mineral and/or organic glass in its visible portion, its wall comprising at least two layers, wherein the layer(s) forming the outer portion are designed, in shape and/or composition, for ensuring impact protection, and the layer(s) forming the inner portion are designed, in shape and/or composition, for ensuring that said structure meets the required mechanical performance. When the structure is used as an electric post (45), it can provide a post which is insulating per se, or in combination with complementary parts of an insulating material. An electrical wire (62) may, for instance, be received in a clamping device (65-65a) fastened to a cover (64) seated on the the upper part of the post.
