Abstract (en)
A liquid crystal compound of the general formula (1) having a ferrielectric phase in its phase sequence, <CHEM> wherein R is a linear alkyl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, both X and Y are hydrogen atoms or one of X and Y is a fluorine atom and the other is a hydrogen atom, A is -CF3 or -C2F5, m is an integer of 2 to 4, n is an integer of 2 to 4, and C* is an asymmetric carbon; a ferrielectric liquid crystal composition containing the liquid crystal compound having a ferrielectric phase, of the above formula (1); and an active matrix liquid crystal display device formed by injecting the above liquid crystal compound or composition between substrates provided with nonlinear active elements such as thin film transistors or diodes formed on each pixel.
