[origin: EP0739843A1] The procedure for separating printed or un-printed books into separate packages includes stacking the books horizontally in a support table (1), each with its back lying on the table. Beneath the stacking table there is a pivoting claw (2) attached to a support by a pivot (3). This is mounted such that when the claw is turned it is forced between two books forming a space in the stack. The operation of this claw may be carried out by an electromagnet. When the claw has been forced into the stack, a separator element (5) mounted on a support carriage (4) is moved into the gap. The separator element comprises two components which can be moved apart in order to separate the two parts of the stack of books. The operation of this element may be synchronised with the movement of the stack of books.
