[origin: DE4403176A1] A cylinder (30) is mounted by means of a shaft (32) in a housing (10) with a support (20) for a paper roll (22). A spring (40) is helically wound around the shaft (32). When the cylinder (30) is rolled forward, the spring (40) is loaded and returns the cylinder to a rest position after the paper web (24) has been cut. One end section (42, 48) of the spring (40) is formed by spring windings that are always in close contact with the shaft (32), so that they act as directional locks. The spring (40) has a main part (46) made of spring coils between its end sections (42, 48). In their unstressed state, the spring coils surround the shaft (32) with a radial gap, and closely contact the shaft (32) only after the cylinder (30) has rolled forward to a predetermined extent, thus preventing the cylinder (30) from rolling further in the forward direction. The cylinder (30) thus allows a predetermined length of paper web (24) to be drawn from the roll (22). The drawn length of paper may then be cut from the paper web (24) by means of a cutting device (50).
