Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0743395A1] The profiling machine (1) is rolled along the rail (47) supported on flanged wheels (22) at each end. Swivel mountings (8) support a grinding frame (3) to position a grinding head onto the rail profile. Guide rollers (4) on the grinding head limit the amount of rail material taken off by the grinding head. The rollers tilt with the frame alignment about an axis parallel to the rail. The two flanges on each support wheel provide a vertical reference for grinding the two flanges of the rail with the appropriate flange brought into contact with the side of the rail by lateral movement of the wheel. The swivel action is controlled by a geared drive (33,34) on the swivel mounting. The differences in height setting, w.r.t. the rail, of the rollers and the flanged wheels control the amount of material removed by the grinding head.
