[origin: DE19520852C1] Ignition system in which the alternating voltage for the production of the second ignition spark has one or more periods of differently high half waves. The first half wave has an amplitude which lies between the maximum necessary voltage (U1) at which ionising takes place between the electrodes (25, 26) of a spark plug and the minimum necessary voltage (U3) at which no ionising takes place. The second half wave has an amplitude which lies above the necessary maximum voltage (U4) at which no ionising is present.
