[origin: DE19520779C1] The adjustment of audio volume can apply to either analogue or digital mono or stereo signals. For digital stereo signals (1, 2), the peak values are identified (2, 4) and are fed to a maximum value stage (5). A still value detector (6) identifies if the value is less than -42 dB and in this case the regulation is ineffective. If above -42 dB the detector provides and output to a filter (7) and this gives an average value that is then used to generate a reference correction value to apply to the audio level control input of the amplifier. This provides automatic adjustment, particularly when changing from one audio source to another.
