[origin: EP0755752A1] The method involves a tool comprising two segments (3,3') which have an abrasive belt (4) lining suitably curved inner surfaces (5,5'). The workpieces (1) are brought into abrasive contact with the belts by adjusting the tool so that the curved inner surfaces have a common centre. The batches of workpieces are moved to-and-fro axially and rotated w.r.t. the belts so that machining takes place continuously at the same rate. The tool simultaneously locks, guides and machines the split ring workpieces. The force associated with the contact is consistently generated from the rings themselves.
