Abstract (en)
[origin: DE4415993A1] According to the invention, a correction process is proposed for a map-supported navigation system or a navigation system in which the position of a motor vehicle found by compound location is checked and corrected. In order to correct the plotted position, a range of error is first set, the extent of which is determined by the tolerances on the vehicles sensors or the error of measurement of a navigation system. All roads within this range of error are regarded as possible vehicle positions. To find the most probable position of the motor vehicle a main path is selected on which the vehicle is travelling. The other positions are used as parallel paths. If plausibility considerations show that a parallel path gives a greater probability of the vehicle's position than the current main path, the parallel path is designated as the new main path. Hysteresis is used to prevent the vehicle's current position from continually jumping to and fro between several roads.
