[origin: EP0759686A2] A procedure for operating at least one lamp of a specified type from a defined energy source has as the first step, viz. the determination of the lamp type, a given voltage or current applied to the lamp and the resultant current or voltage ascertained, from which the type is found. There is a controllable electronic unit to supply the voltage or current, two input devices for other information and a sensor to determine the current or voltage. There is a storage unit for the data. There is a signal generator between the control unit and the electronic unit. The sensor is a photoelectric one. The control unit is a microprocessor.
