Abstract (en)

An improved winding apparatus for winding a length of an element onto a form includes: a first retention cylinder which in a first position retains a first end of the length of element against a first backstop cylinder; a second retention cylinder which in a first position retains a second end of the length of element against a second backstop cylinder; means for driving the retention and backstop cylinders to rotate the length of element in a first direction through the form; means for alternately, successively moving one of the first and second retention cylinders to its second, retracted position to release the innermost loop of element to cause it to be wound onto the form as the length of element rotates; and means for returning the moved retention cylinder to its first position after the innermost loop of element is released to retain the remaining loops of element. <IMAGE>
