Abstract (en)
The check-outs are in groups comprising e.g. two V-formation or three Y-formation (13,13') units, adjoining exit barriers (4,5,6). Trolleys (e.g. A1), carrying purchases in collapsible boxes on open platforms, with larger items underneath, enter an unloading bay (e.g. 14A). The customer transfers boxes and loose items to a tray (27A). The unit operator (18A) prices the items successively with a fixed or portable bar-code scanner (15A), placing them in loaded boxes (n) on the trolley, transferred (m) to the outgoing bay (16A) by the customer, who then goes (A3,A4) to a desk (8) where a cashier (66) completes the payment transaction. Some units (A,F) have supplementary unloading facilities (26A) with handling conveyors. Optionally, reversible consoles (e.g. 15A) allow customers to carry out the pricing and transfer themselves, generally supervised by nearby staff (e.g. 18B,18C,66).
