[origin: EP0766149A2] The device provides the position of a pointer driven via gearwheels (1,2,3) using openings (8a,8b,8c,8d,11) in at least one of the gearwheels. The openings are inserted in the path of a reflection light barrier (4,12). One or more reflector elements (12) are attached to a further gearwheel. The light signal provided by the sensor (6) for the light barrier is fed to an evaluation stage for calculating the angular position of the gearwheels and hence the position of the pointer.
