[origin: WO9636202A1] A remote controlling and monitoring device (10) for a discharge lamp powered by an electricity distribution line is installed adjacent a lamp (11) and comprises means for transmitting and receiving messages carried by the electric line (15, 16) supplying power to the lamp (11) by a modulated bi-directional carrier current so as to communicate with a central station (3), means for controlling the switching on and switching off as well as the lighting intensity of the lamp according to instructions from the central station (3) and means for detecting a failure in the lamp (11) and for informing the central station (3) accordingly.
