[origin: EP0773078A1] The press has a number of successive press stations (11) between which the workpiece is transported via a transfer device having at least 2 transport rails (41) extending in the transport direction and an associated drive. The transport rails are fitted with spaced carriers (51) provided with grippers engaging the workpiece. It has a reception device (69) holding a second carrier at a given spacing from a first carrier which is less than the spacing of the transport rails.
