[origin: DE19520057A1] In a process for distributing letters in which the individual letters are isolated and the address data on each letter is read, it is proposed that when the address data on each letter belonging to a predetermined sorting class is read, that letter should be given an identifying marker characterising the letter's position in a stack; and that each identifying marker should be assigned to an element in a predetermined sequence of distribution positions and the assignment of the identifying markers to the sequence elements should be displayed.
