[origin: DE19528829A1] The aligner comprises a base belt (1) and a cover belt (2). The letters (3) are moved standing on one edge. The cover belt in normal operation has a nominal speed of VN. There is a pair of rollers (5,6) with a common rotary axis (7) vertical to the belt's conveying direction. As the letter is covered only from behind by the cover belt, the rollers can locate on it in with a frictional engagement. As soon as a letter is secured by the rollers, a torque is exerted on it to alter its position in relation to the conveyor system. For this purpose, one of the rollers rotates with a nominal speed (VN), whilst the second roller has a different speed (V). The difference between the two speeds leads to the formation of a torque on the letter so that its position can be corrected where necessary.
