[origin: EP0775986A2] A modular franking accountancy system comprises a credit restoration system, a code information system and an open franking system. Files of franking accountancy reports are created in the franking security unit within the open franking system. These files are also created (200) in either or both of the general purpose computers in the open franking system or the credit restoration system thus constituting a back up. Subsequent transactions of either franking (230) or restoration of credit (240) update the primary and back up files.
