[origin: EP0777025A1] This new vehicle door hinge has braking and holding functions. It comprises a pair of hinge leaves (1, 2), with one or more bores (50, 60) in each, to take the hinge pin (3), and attaches to the door or door bar and framing section. The hinge pin is solid and is secured against rotation in one of the hinge bores, passing through the other with bearing clearance. In the novel design, the pin and bore, seen in cross section, have a curved departure from circularity, with free bearing clearance over a range of opening, and braking effect beyond. Preferably, the non-circular bearing section of the hinge pin is wear-protected by hard layers of e.g. a carbide, nitride, carbo-nitride, boride, hard chrome, ceramic, graded and ion implanted layers, or combinations of these. Alternatively, wear-protective solid lubricants are used, based on e.g. molybdenum disulphide, PTFE, graphite, lead or cadmium.
