Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9607547A1] A visually identifiable optical element, in particular a safety element for securities, such as bank notes, credit cards, identity cards or checks, or other objects that need to be safeguarded, has a substrate with a diffuse reflecting visible surface and a metallised layer applied on certain areas of the visible surface (12, 34) of the substrate (10, 28, 36). The surface of said metallised layer has a metallic brilliant appearance when observed from a certain angle. In order to improve such an optical element so that objects provided therewith are even better protected against forgery than is possible with known optical elements, two areas (14, 16, 30, 32, 40, 42) of the visible surface (12, 34) of the substrate have different reflectivities, in particular diffuse reflectivities for light. One part (18, 24, 26) or several parts (38) of each of the two substrate areas (14, 16, 30, 32, 40, 42) are metallised. Observed from directions outside a viewing range, the metallised parts have a reflectivity that is lower than or substantially equal to the reflectivity of the most reflective substrate area and higher than or substantially equal to the less reflective substrate area.
