Abstract (en)
[origin: DE4432326A1] The invention concerns a method of testing the toxicity of materials, in particular synthetic materials, wherein cells are incubated under defined reaction conditions in liquid batches together with the material to be tested. The degree of toxicity of the material can be deduced from the reaction of the cells. The method is characterized in that cells are used whose cell membranes contain arachidonic acid as essential component and in whose membranes [<3>H]arachidonic acid has previously been incorporated. The marked cells are incubated in a test batch in the presence of the material to be tested and in a material-free control batch. The test batch and control batch are adjusted such that they contain the same number of cells and the radioactivity is determined at specific times in the cell-free excess of the batches. Information about the toxicity of the material tested is deduced from the difference between the values measured for the test and control batches.
