[origin: DE19527503A1] In an electronic control system for an internal combustion engine, the controller cuts off ignition and/or injection when the will to stop is recognised and determines the position of the internal combustion engine even during the slow down phase until its standstill. Shortly before engine standstill, fuel is once again injected into at least one still open inlet valve. When the internal combustion engine is started again, ignition is triggered in the at least one cylinder into which additional fuel was injected, so that a first torque is immediately generated. In order to determine the probable standstill position of the internal combustion engine, its speed of rotation or speed of rotation gradient is detected during the slowing down phase.
