[origin: DE4438878A1] The invention concerns a sealing system (4) for an essentially vertical shaft (3) at the point (2) where the shaft passes through a housing wall (1). The sealing system has an active seal element (13, 23, 24) located between a component (7) which rotates with the shaft (3) and a component (8) mounted on the housing, the housing wall (1) separating an upper, oil-free space from a lower, oil-containing space. In order to be able to eliminate the heat generated by the rotating system in sealing systems of this kind, the invention proposes that oil is passed through the sealing system (4) and that the component (7) which rotates with the shaft (3) and another component (9) mounted on the housing form a gap (11) through which the oil flows.
