[origin: JP2001166739A] PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device including a passive display, a light source and a video signal input. SOLUTION: This display system adjusts the light form a light source so that the passive display generates a picture in response to a video signal at the time of an operation then the intensity of the light source is controlled by the video signal. In the method for generating a display picture by using the passive display illuminated by the light source, the light source is controlled so that the display obtains prescribed amount of information and the display picture provided with gray scale and color characteristics. In the method for reducing power consumption by a display system by which an incident light from the light source is controlled so that a light control display generates the picture, electric power suplied to the light source is controlled so as to reduce the output of relatively dark image.
