[origin: EP0791687A1] A process for applying a fluid or paste-like coating to a running web (7) of material preferably containing waste paper or cardboard has the following steps: direct application (2, 5) of the medium (8, 8') to at least one side of the web; a following separate compression (3, 6) of the applied medium. Also claimed for implementing the process is a first apparatus comprising a coating mechanism (2); a rotating counter face (1) with surface (1A) for guiding the web along a support section and; a press roller (3) rotating in the opposite direction to the counter face to compress the medium on the web. Taken in the web passage direction, first the coating mechanism is associated with the support section and then at a following distance comes the press roller which forms a gap with the counter face. Also claimed is a second apparatus with in addition a counter press roller which forms a gap with the press roller and follows a distance after the coating mechanism. Also claimed is a third apparatus where the medium is applied to both sides of the web by two coating mechanisms symmetrically disposed about the web and followed at a distance by a pair of press rollers rotating in opposite directions but with the web run and forming a gap through which the web passes. Also claimed is a fourth apparatus where the coating mechanism is a type allowing free-flow of the coating onto an upper-facing unsupported web side followed by press rollers forming a gap.
