Abstract (en)
[origin: WO9617130A1] The provision of a thin antiskid overlay on an existing road is usually effected by the laying out of a so-called "thin hot mix asphalt", implying both technical and environmental problems. Alternative "cold" methods are known, comprising the laying out of a lower layer of coarse stones and a top layer of smaller stones with a suitable bituminous binder being applied therebeneath and therebetween. However, this may result both in loose top stones and in a surplus of binder in the top surface, giving rise to damages on vehicles driving on the repaired road. According to the invention, an advantageous "cold" technique is provided by first laying out a layer of coarse stones, with or without a bottom binder layer, and then laying out a charge of finer stones, not as an additional layer, but only to the extent of filling out the upper voids of the layer of coarse stones, whereafter a low viscosity binder is sprayed against the top side of the resulting layer, whereby the finer stones are rapidly effectively bonded in the surface. The binder seeks downwardly in the layer so as to effect overall bonding, and the finer stones are mechanically stabilized in the said voids, such that the treated road can very soon be reopened for traffic.
