[origin: WO9616285A1] Piston ring seals (1) for internal combustion engines are known with a piston ring (2) in the end region of a piston (3) towards the combustion chamber; said piston ring is provided with a conical inner surface (9) which co-operates with a matching conical ring land (6) of a piston (3). The piston ring (2) lies against the cylinder wall (12) of a cylinder (4) in which the piston (3) is capable of axial movement. In order to improve the characteristics of the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a piston ring seal (1) is proposed in which the conical inner surface (9) of the piston ring (2) extends as far as said piston ring's top piston ring surface (17) facing the combustion chamber, and the conical ring land (6) of the piston (3) extends with its upper conical surface (7) as far as the top piston face (16) facing the combustion chamber, so that the piston ring surface (17) of the piston ring (2) forms a common gap-free sealing surface (18) with the piston face (16) of the piston (3).
