The engine operating method uses a control device with an electronic memory holding the ideal performance data for the engine, compared with the actual performance data, to allow the stored data to be updated. The performance data may be stored in the memory together with corresponding date information, with redundant storage of the ideal performance data outside the control device. The vehicle identification data may also be stored by the control device.

Bei einem Verfahren zum Betrieb einer Brennkraftmaschine mit Hilfe einer Steuereinrichtung, die einen elektronischen Speicher für vorgegebene, für das Leistungsverhalten der Brennkraftmaschine relevante Programmdaten (Soll-Leistungsdaten) enthält, werden die Soll-Leistungsdaten zusätzlich abgespeichert und die Soll-Leistungsdaten mit den aktuellen, für das Leistungsverhalten der Brennkraftmaschine relevanten Programmdaten (Ist-Leistungsdaten) verglichen und die Ist-Leistungsdaten abgespeichert, wenn sie gegenüber den Soll-Leistungsdaten verändert sind.
