[origin: EP0802388A2] The rifle uses gas under pressure, having a gas-cylinder (15) closed at one end (17) and forming a chamber (33) connected via a tapping (5) and passage (35) to the bore (7) of the rifle barrel. A piston (25) in the cylinder works between a rest position in which it defines the minimum volume of the chamber and an end position defining the maximum volume. The piston is a clearance fit in the cylinder, and in it one or more piston-rings (31) fit, working against the inside surface of the cylinder. There can be several rings, e.g. three, which are close together, form a strip, and can be pre-loaded against the cylinder wall. One ring at least can be near the piston end which is nearest to the chamber. There can be a control boss (29) on the piston protruding into the chamber, and which is a close fit in an opening (19) in the cylinder end.
