[origin: DE19502472A1] In order to obtain a very sharp image, especially an enlarged image, of an object, a process is proposed in which a structure is projected on the object, the object is imaged in several planes (sharpness planes) perpendicularly to the direction of observation, the contrast between adjacent image regions is determined for each plane, the contrasts of corresponding image regions of various planes are compared, image regions with maximum contrast are selected from different planes and at least these are used as a maximum contrast image for further processing.
