[origin: DE19507056A1] A screw press has a rotary screw (5), a flywheel (8) that turns without interruption in one direction of rotation, a hydraulically controlled friction clutch whose coupling disk (12) establishes a frictional connection between the screw (5) and the flywheel (8) to produce a working stroke, and a restoring rotary drive (15; 23) for moving backwards a tool carriage (3) that moves back and forth in the swept volume inside the machine body. To compensate for the weight of the tool carriage (3), the tool carriage (3) is connected to pneumatic cylinders (13) that have an accumulation-compression chamber (27), a cylinder chamber (26a) at the top side of the piston and a cylinder chamber (26b) at the bottom side of the piston. In order to improve the operation of this screw press, in particular reducing the energy required to brake the tool carriage (3) after its return stroke, its weight is compensated in a controlled manner depending on the speed of the piston (31) during its return stroke, and the air displaced during the return stroke of the piston (31) or tool carriage (3) is throttled.
