[origin: WO9626885A1] In order to be able to check automatically, in a conveyer, whether a chain strand (4) used for driving a chain wheel (1) is to be discarded, the chain strand (4) is monitored in the region of the chain wheel (1) by a specially designed chain guide system (7). If, as a result of wear or elongation of the chain strand (4), horizontal members (5) move up onto the teeth (2) of the chain wheel (1), a switch (14) or sensor shifted by the guide system or a movable guide element (9) is actuated and interrupts the feed circuit of the driving device of the chain wheel (1).
