[origin: EP0812960A2] The mechanism (17) transports the sleeper (16) from a conveyor delivering in the lengthwise direction of the track onto a bed of ballast material. On its side towards the sleeper the beam (45) has suction nozzles (59) connected by pipe (61) to an exhauster (62). It can be adjusted for height on a machine chassis by a drive mechanism (47), and can also be tilted on a horizontal axis at right angles to the track, and can slew on an axis (53) passing through the beam contact surface (52). The beam itself can be hollow, with a connecting port for the pipe and also a contact beam (57) held clear of it. Cylindrical and compressible suction pipes are provided between the two beams.
