[origin: DE19625043C1] In a mail distribution assembly, the items for a mailing are taken separately from a stack, or stacks for collation. Any overlap is detected by a number of different measurements for each take-off to give an overlapping index for given measured values. Each established index is assigned to a probability (P mu i) for an overlap which has been set by a statistical study of a large number of representative test mailings. The total probability (P) for an overlapping is taken from the separate indices and their associated probabilities according to the following relationship: P=1-((1-P( mu 1)e1)(1-P( mu 2)e2)...(1-P( mu n)en)). Any overlapping is indicated on exceeding a selected threshold probability (Pg).
