[origin: EP0816201A1] The device uses a cable laid along at least a region of a section of track with electrical marker points (M) coupled to at least one transmitter and/or receiver antenna in the train (F). The marker points at coarse i.e.approx. location points (GO) outside the range of influence of any rail connectors (SV) have a substantially different distance pattern compared to outside the coarse location positions. The different pattern uses closer or wider marker spacings than usual. The train determines its general position from the detection of a coarse location position. Following this crossing position signals triggered when subsequent marker positions are passed are associated with positions.
