[origin: WO9628377A1] A method and system for controlling the speed of a winch which can improve the safety and operability thereof without being put into a free fall state and obtain a lowering speed which is the same as what would be obtained in the free fall state. In order to make this happen, the rotation speed of a winch drum (13) is kept substantially at a unique one relative to the stroke of an operation lever (5) until the operation lever (5) reaches a predetermined stroke, while it becomes different relative to the same stroke of the operation lever (5) in accordance with a speed mode selected from a plurality of speed modes when the operation lever exceeds the predetermined stroke.
