[origin: EP0823507A2] The press (10) in a paper or cardboard manufacturing machine for treating a pulp web (12) has a gap (14) extending in the direction (L) the web travels. The gap comprises two pressure surfaces, at least one being formed from a flexible cover (18) over a shoe or saddle (16) and there being a fluid cushion between shoe and saddle to enable pressure to be applied against the opposing surface. The saddle is activated in such a way that, in the web travel direction, the resulting force focal point can be varied so that the pressure profile in the same direction is correspondingly affected. At least one drainage felt (28) is drawn through the gap along with the web and at least one controller (30) sets the pressure profile by adjusting the position of the focal point relative to the saddle in accordance with an input quantity (Ei) representing over its lifetime, the running felt's condition, behaviour or both.
