[origin: EP0823508A2] A press (10) in a paper or cardboard manufacturing machine to process pulp web (12) has a gap (14) extending in the web travel direction (L) and bounded by two pressure surfaces, one at least being formed from a flexible cover (18) over a shoe or saddle (16). Between shoe and saddle is a fluid cushion enabling pressure to be applied against the opposing surface in such a way that the resultant main press force acting on the saddle is in a direction perpendicular to web going through the gap. Means (28) are provided for loading the saddle with positive or negative auxiliary forces which at least in essence are effective in a direction perpendicular to the main force to impart a tilting moment on the saddle about an axis of tilt extending across the press and perpendicular to web travel. The resultant pressure profile in the web's travel direction is essentially independent of the main press force.
