Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19514137A1] The invention concerns a prop, which can be filled with construction material, for use in underground mining or tunnel construction, the prop being designed to be braced against the roof by a hydraulic prop-extension device before it is filled. In order to simplify handling of such a prop and to give the prop early-bearing characteristics, the invention proposes that the prop-extension device is integrated in the prop and has a piston (4) which makes a seal with the inner wall of an outer tube (2) and which acts on an inner tube (3) to extend the prop. Located below the piston (4) in the outer tube (2) is a first chamber (5) into which a hydraulic fluid under pressure can be passed through a filling point to extend the prop. Located on the other side of the piston (4), opposite to the first chamber (5), is a second chamber (7) which can be filled with construction material through a separate filling point (8). The piston (4) is designed as a component which is separate from the inner tube (3) and, when the second chamber (7) is being filled, is displaced, under the weight of the construction material, across the first chamber (5), if necessary to the floor of the chamber.
