[origin: WO9635048A1] There are two control circuits for individual-cylinder lambda control. An outer control loop regulates the air ratio in the total exhaust gas by means of a proportional integral regulator and the air ratio is cylinder-selectively regulated in an inner control loop. Use is made in identifying the individual cylinder air ratios of a gradient process by means of which a qualitative evaluation may be made concerning variations in the individual cylinder air ratios on the basis of the rise characteristic of the oxygen sensor signal. A 2-point proportional integral regulator is used to cancel out the air ratio differences between the individual cylinders.
