[origin: EP0827785A2] A process for the production of protective coatings (I) of a uniform colouring by etching rolled titanium zinc sheet products (II) in the form of band, sheet or strips for use in construction is claimed. (II) is etched in a bath containing sulphuric and nitric acids, rinsed and a protective layer (I) formed by passivation through the application of a chromate containing polymer (III).Also claimed is (II) treated such that the protective layer (I) is 0.4-3.0, preferably 1-2 microns thick and has a chromate content of 5-40 mg/m<2>.
