[origin: EP0829439A1] Separate rolls (21,22) are formed from a main strip (20) of overall width (B). They rest on coiling beds formed by supporting drums (15-17) which are individually driven. At least during initial coiling the coils are pressed by drums (1,2) against the supporting ones. A coil is selected midway across the main strip and the pressure drum is driven independently of the supporting ones. The torque exerted by the pressure drum on the coil forms an adjustable proportion of the total torque exerted on the roll. There can be several coils midway across the main strip, each with an individually-driven pressure drum, or such a drum can be provided for each of the coils. Torque from the pressure roller can typically be reduced as the coil height increases.
