[origin: EP0829977A2] The radio receiver provides traffic messages to a user via a display (13) or a speech output circuit (14). A control circuit (7), e.g. a microprocessor, enables the reading of data via an external memory unit (16) from e.g. a smartcard (17), or from an internal store (12). The latter stores data relating to roads at national level while the information stored in the smartcard is specific to a particular region. In each case, a suitable classification term is stored along with the road-identifying data. Under the direction of the control circuit, data is extracted in response to received traffic messages to provide additional information. This can be in the form of road names instead of their alphanumeric designations. Versions in different languages may be stored together.
