[origin: EP0833051A1] During the starting of an internal combustion engine the starting motor voltage varies cyclically with the compression and exhaust stages of the cylinders. The positive cycles may be isolated by a zener diode for examination by a microcomputer. The microcomputer determines the time at which the positive cycles commence (T0,T2,T4,..) and also the times of the peaks (T1,T3,T5...). After the first positive cycle the time of searching for a peak during successive cycles is limited by applying a coefficient (M) to the relative time of occurrence of previous peaks, for example M(T1-T0).
