[origin: WO9600366A1] Waste (22) moves down through a gasification chamber (1) as the lowermost waste is gasified by means of a gasifying agent fed in via an inlet (3). The gaseous gasification products (4) are fed into a postcombustion chamber (5) and burnt by means of a supply of secondary air (6). A heat exchanger (8) is arranged at the outlet of the postcombustion chamber (5) to preheat an adjustable proportion of the gasifying agent and the secondary air. The waste (22) in the gasification area (2) and the gaseous gasification products (4) are preheated before being fed into the postcombustion chamber (5) since the lower portion (24) of the gasification chamber (1) where the gasification area is located projects into the postcombustion chamber (5). Gasification and postcombustion processes may thus be sustained even with waste having a low calorific value.
