Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9702682A1] The invention concerns a process for transferring data packets between a source LEC of a first ELAN and a target LEC of a second ELAN, the process comprising the following steps: determining the target ATM address by transmitting an address-resolving enquiry of the source LEC to the second ELAN via a CLS wide-area network preparing a connectionless service and resolving the target MAC address in the second ELAN into the associated ATM address; establishing connection between the source LEC and target LEC via an ATM network, which is of a higher level than the first ELAN and the second ELAN, using the target ATM address determined; and transferring the data packets via the higher-level ATM network. In one embodiment, the ATM address determined, as the address-resolving response, is transmitted via the CLS wide-area network to the first ELAN and from there to the source LEC which establishes a connection to the target LEC.
