[origin: EP0837226A1] The internal combustion engine has a setting device (2) comprising a controlled sleeve (8) able to move in a cylinder head (7). It also has a through-hole (10) in the sleeve jacket (9) via which a sector (11') of the gas exchange channel (11) in the cylinder head is connected to another sector (11") formed by the shell on the combustion chamber side. The end of the channel is controlled by a lift valve (13) which is in drive connection with a lift operating device in the sleeve acting as an actuator (14). The sleeve can be moved independently of the actuator.
