[origin: DE19644409C1] The cooling water chamber (4) has cooling water flowing through it in the longitudinal direction and in a cross direction in its lower area adjacent to the base (1). In the flow direction of the longitudinal flow (L) in front of the gas exchange channels (5) of each cylinder a threshold (12) is provided, extending from the base (1) into the cooling water chamber (4) and running crossways to the longitudinal flow direction. Inflow apertures for the cross flow (Q) are provided between adjacent inlet and outlet channels (5) and in front of each shaft (7) in the longitudinal flow direction a guide device (14) is provided, which deflects the longitudinal flow and at least the cooling water of the cross flow around the shaft (7).
