[origin: WO9614474A1] The invention concerns an impact compaction apparatus for compacting a soil surface. The apparatus has a wheeled frame (15) with one or more impact compactor masses (10) connected rotatably to the frame for delivering periodic impact blows to the soil surface when the frame is moved over the surface. In accordance with the invention, a variable vertical force can be applied to the impact compactor mass(es), thereby to vary the blow energy delivered to the soil surface at each impact blow.
